The Painting.

Detail of the intense chiaroscuro from the single candle lighting the scene is a technique often employed by the Northern followers of Caravaggio, such as Dutch painter Gerard van Honthorst (1590-1656) and French artist Georges de la Tour (1593-1652). However, Artemisia's realism is more in keeping with Caravaggio, the originator of intense contrast between light and dark.
